The FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) is a United States federal law requiring covered employers to provide eligible employees with job-protected, unpaid leave for specified family and medical reasonsThis leave allows employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year for various reasons, including caring for a newborn or newly adopted child, caring for a family member with a serious health condition, or taking leave for their own serious health condition. The FMLA also requires employers to maintain the employee’s health insurance coverage during the leave and to restore the employee to the same or equivalent job upon their return, according to the U.S. Department of Labor
